Signs your heat pump needs repair

It cools but will not heat, or heats but will not cool: usually the reversing valve or its control.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice and will not clear it, which points to the defrost control or sensor.
Air from the vents is cool in heating mode or only slightly cool in cooling mode.
The outdoor unit will not start, hums or trips the breaker.
The system runs constantly, or short-cycles every few minutes.
Grinding, squealing or rattling from the outdoor fan or the blower.

Questions about heat pump repair

Most often the reversing valve or the solenoid that controls it, or a control board or thermostat fault that never calls for heat. It can also be a refrigerant charge problem that only shows in heating mode. A diagnosis tells you which.

Heat pumps frost up in heating mode and clear themselves with a defrost cycle. If the ice never clears, the defrost control, sensor or reversing valve is not doing its job, or the charge is low. Running it iced over strains the compressor, so have it checked.
